5º – Onibaba (Kaneto Shindô, 1964)
The plot features two unscrupulous women who end up murdering a samurai and selling their belongings. The film gains its substance when one of them has access to a strange mask, having his life completely changed for the worse. A masterpiece of Japanese cinema from the 1960s, ‘Onibaba’ charms for its unrepeatable atmospheric terror, drawing on a well-constructed plot, good performances and, of course, the masterful direction of Kaneto Shindô.
