9º – Phantom Thread (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2017)During the 1950’s, a respected middle-aged stylist ends up developing a passion for an ordinary young woman, starting with her a strange and obsessive relationship that will transform the way they both view life. A masterpiece, ‘Phantom Thread’ brings all the mastery we are used to in the cinema of Paul Thomas Anderson. A story that moves in a cadenced way and destroys its central characters completely, leaving the task of “labeling” right or wrong to the spectators and their subjective views. The work gains dynamism when the three begin a game of deception and surprises impossible to have its end predicted. The Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos takes us through a dense and fascinating story in all its aspects. A film that grows by the minute, always using magisterial performances, a unique direction and one of the most beautiful cinematographies ever seen in the seventh art.
