3º – Downfall (Oliver Hirschbiegel, 2004)
We will explore the decisive moments of World War II through the eyes of the Nazi army, inserting us into all that madness and paranoia through the figure of defeat. ‘Downfall’ is a masterpiece of German cinema, bringing an irredeemable history, which can assertively study the zeitgeist present at the time.
2º – The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow, 2008)
In the midst of the Iraq War, the plot will focus on showing the frightening daily lives of a US Army anti-bomb squad. Another film by director Kathryn Bigelow on this list, “The Hurt Locker” has a different central proposal, trying to make explicit how the figure of war is important for some of those involved, raising the extremely subjective notion of the meaning of life.
1º – Das Boot (Wolfgang Petersen, 1981)
In the midst of World War II, we will follow the journey of a German submarine and its crew. The plot gains its strength when the submarine is struck by enemy forces, leaving its crew on an unlikely mission for survival. Claustrophobic, ‘Das Boot’ transposes to the viewer a niche little explored in the arc wars in the seventh art, evidencing an antagonist invisible to the central personages, who fight to keep the submarine struck operating against all odds.
