4º – People Places Things (Jim Strouse, 2015)
A comic book designer has to deal with his turbulent day by day, reconciling a badly resolved divorce, his small daughters, his parallel work as a teacher, and a new romance with the mother of one of his students. Fun in each proposed scene, ‘People Places Things’ shows, in a light and sweet way, the frantic degree that a life has for various individuals in our society. A recent little-known film, but one that certainly deserves a closer look.
3º – Anomalisa (Duke Johnson and Charlie Kaufman, 2015)
A successful writer meets in a hotel to give a talk. Instead, this writer, a man disillusioned internally, will live an improbable affair with one of his fans, coming to rediscover some of life’s greatest pleasures. ‘Anomalisa’ is one of the most daring animations ever conceived, bringing a sad story about the middle age, highlighting themes such as depression, melancholy, destructive society and a whole compendium of pathologies present in the most diverse individuals. A brilliant film by directors Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson.
2º – Husbands (John Cassavetes, 1970)
Three middle-aged friends re-evaluate their lives after learning of the death of a close person. Now the three will embark on a quest for something more, some meaning, in their lives. Directed by the legendary John Cassavetes, ‘Husbands’ takes advantage of the documentary style of the filmmaker to give even more density to what we are accompanying, exposing the most common fragments to life.
1º – Sideways (Alexander Payne, 2004)
Two friends embark on a trip to a small town known for its wines. In the midst of this journey, the two, each with his personality and way of seeing the world, will live diverse situations, as well as discuss the paths of their lives. ‘Sideways’ features the best of Alexander Payne’s movies, telling a deep and extremely funny plot. Here, we will also have the opportunity to see actor Paul Giamatti deliver us one of the best performances of his career.
