8º – The Ballad of Narayama (Shôhei Imamura, 1983)
Focused on a poor 19th century Japanese village, the plot shows the lives of the members of the place, bringing the common folk sense that all those who reach a certain age should move to a distant mountain to die. ‘The Ballad of Narayama’ denounces the erratic way a society treats older people in a rustic and sometimes disturbing story.
