10 Atmospheric Horror Movies To Watch

4º – Possession (Andrzej Zulawski, 1981)Disruptive in all its directions, the film brings the collapse to the madness of a couple in crisis in their relationship. Despite being notable for its exacerbated graphic content, ‘Possession’ also draws attention to its engaging storyline (though it is difficult to find meaning in every unevenness of the plot) and its extremely skillful direction of filmmaker Andrzej Zulawski.

3º – The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (Robert Eggers, 2015)In the seventeenth century, a family embedded in a rural reality is plagued by rumors that a witch pervades the place. Along with the rumors, strange happenings will occur with the members of the family, putting at stake the fate of their lives. ‘The Witch’ is one of the great surprises of the 2000s genre. A dense film, leaving all its substance to the proposed attractive atmosphere, leading a story full of nuances.

2º – The Shining (Stanley Kubrick, 1980)A man accepts a job as a janitor of a large hotel for the holiday period of the place, taking his wife and son to accompany him in the period of isolation. Isolated from the world by the snow, the family begins to witness strange happenings in the place, at the same time that the man ends up losing his contact with the reality. Based on Stephen King’s novel, ‘The Shining’, despite receiving some criticism for not being extremely faithful to the book, it is one of the greatest films of the genre, bringing an irredeemable work.

1º – Jacob’s Ladder (Adrian Lyne, 1990)The film features several random fragments of the life of Jacob, a troubled veteran of the Vietnam War, showing the full intensity of his life, along with events that may not be real. The plot will vary between hallucinations and real events, without ever informing the viewer about what each one is. The cold atmosphere, emanating a feeling of helplessness, whether in the character or the spectator itself, manages to give all the necessary substance to the film.
