3º – Miss Violence (Alexandros Avranas, 2013)
At the birthday party of her 11th birthday, Angeliki, calm and silent, without anyone noticing, walks to the balcony of her apartment and plays. The film will spend 98 minutes in duration, breaking up the reasons for the girl’s suicide, revealing a dark side to that apparently perfect family. ‘Miss Violence’ is a punch in the spectator’s stomach, bringing the meanders of evil and its unfolding in the lives of many people. A pearl of Greek cinema.
2º – Calibre (Matt Palmer, 2018)
Two men, in their 30s, decide to remember pleasurable things about their friendship in the past, going to a small town to practice hunting. The problem is that a terrible accident linked to mere chance and local truculence will leave them both in an extreme and disturbing situation. ‘Calibre’ certainly doesn’t have all the recognition it should have. Its dense, cadenced and, of course, quite intelligent story completely holds the viewer’s attention to the unfolding of each scene fragment. A work that shows a little about the rotten core of the human being in the world and, also, about the sometimes tragic figure of simple chance.
1º – Polytechnique (Denis Villeneuve, 2009)
Based on a real event, the film tells the story of a massacre in a school that had killed several students. We will gain substance in the plot by exploring the lives of the individuals affected before the tragic day. Sadly, this work is impeccably conceived by its director, the great Denis Villeneuve, with a short and punctual history in his onslaughts, promoting a series of questions to the spectator.
