2º – Don’t Look Now (Nicolas Roeg, 1973)After the tragic death of their little daughter, a couple intends to deal with the bereavement process on a trip to Venice. However, as the couple’s time advances in the city, strange events begin to happen, linking the recent tragic event of their lives with terrifying new elements. ‘Don’t Look Now’ is intelligent in its proposal, working with a plot that is frightened by the delivery of fragments to the spectator in a dosed way. Another crucial point for the film’s success is the beautiful atmosphere that director Nicolas Roeg manages to create, leaving everything more gloomy and rustic, and frightening on its own.
1º – American Beauty (Sam Mendes, 1999)A middle-aged man, wrapped up in an unpleasant family and professional routine, decides to break with the erratic bonds of his life, giving rise to a new and unique model of behaving. Directed by Sam Mendes, ‘American Beauty’ distinguishes the rotten interior of some middle-class families of American society, exposing all the claudicant nature that comprises its members.
